Chair Nancy Sungenis

Chair Nancy Sungenis has been an active member of the Democratic Party for over 50 years. Prior to becoming the Chair of the Cumberland County Democratic Organization in 2021, she served as the Vice-Chairperson from 1993 until 2021. She served as a Hopewell Township Committee Member from 1976 to 1985 and was the first female Mayor of Hopewell Township. While serving as a Mayor, she was able to secure a grant for sewer hook-up in Hopewell Township and bring cable television to the area. She served on various committees of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors as well on the Hopewell Township Planning Board. Chair Sungenis served on the Board of Directors of Cumberland County Utilities Authority from 1989 to 2013 and as Commissioner of Registration for the Cumberland County Board of Elections from 2001 to 2013.

Additional noteworthy leaderships held were President of the Cumberland County Democratic Organization, Delegate to the National Convention for the Democratic Party, President of the National Association of Insurance Women of Cumberland and Salem Counties, Board of Directors of the Arc of Cumberland County, Board of Directors of the New Jersey League of Municipalities, President of the Board of Directors of Woodland Country Day School, President of Mutual Insurance Women, Board Member of the New Jersey Federation of Democratic Women, Board of Trustees President for the Rosenhayn United Methodist Church, and delegate to several Democratic conferences and conventions.

Chair Sungenis has worked with the community and, therefore, is a recipient of various awards, such as, Charter Member of the Cumberland County Women’s Hall of Fame, State of New Jersey Association of Environmental Authorities Commissioner of the Year, Insurance Woman of the Year, Cumberland County Democrat of the Year, “Book of Golden Deeds” award from the Exchange Club of Bridgeton, Honoree of the Ionic Chapter #15 Order of Eastern Star, recipient of the Francis “Binks” Sharp award from the Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Bridgeton High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. She was involved in supporting Manna From Heaven’s food distribution to the needy and donating children’s bicycles for the Salvation Army to distribute to children in our area. She was a former Girl Scout Trooper Leader, Master of Ceremonies of the “Seniors Have Talent” talent show, disc jockey for W.S.N.J. radio where she interviewed Patsy Cline and others. She coached girls pigtail softball league, and currently sponsors the West Cumberland Little League. She co-founded Sungenis Insurance Agency with her late husband, Anthony Sungenis.

Chair Sungenis has had the privilege of meeting nine Presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy E. Carter, William J. Clinton, Barack H. Obama, Donald J. Trump, and Joseph R. Biden, along with many other elected leaders. She and her late husband raised one child, Jill. In her free time, she loves being involved with her church, serving the community, and enjoys traveling.
